Newark — The New Jersey State Council of Sheet Metal Workers, representing five local unions, today announced its endorsement of Phil Murphy to be the next Governor of New Jersey.
State Council President Joseph Demark, Jr, president and business manager of Local 25 in Carlstadt, announced the endorsement on behalf of Locals 19, 22, 25, 27, and 137, whose memberships span the entire state, including New York and Pennsylvania. Demark said the State Council made the decision to endorse Murphy after meeting with him and discussing his focus on creating new jobs through strategic investments in critical infrastructure, reclaiming the state’s place in the innovation economy, and revitalizing the state’s cities.
“Phil Murphy is the governor the construction trades need to create the jobs that will rebuild New Jersey and position our state to take on the challenges of the 21st Century,” said Demark. “He recognizes the importance of working with labor to educate and train the next generation of craftsmen we will need to keep our future bright. Our members are anxious to be part of our state’s economic revitalization and excited to work with Phil to make sure he is in the State House to make it happen.”
The five locals comprising the State Council represent 9,500 sheet metal workers statewide. The State Council is the second member of the state’s building and construction trades to endorse Murphy, after the Northeast Region Council of Carpenters.
“I am grateful to all the members of the State Council for their support and endorsement, and look forward to working with them to rebuild New Jersey’s economy,” said Murphy.
